The law defines each region as a list of council areas. Our postcode checker uses the ONS region for the postcode (via postcodes.io), which matched the official council lists in every case we tested.
Note: Spot check of 344 random English postcodes on 2026-10-20: every council was in the region the regulations give it. postcodes.io calls one region 'Yorkshire and The Humber'; the regulations call it 'Yorkshire and Humber'.
